La dinde|Turkey

Elle ne vole pas, pourtant elle a beaucoup voyagé. Native d’Amérique, la dinde est la seule volaille domestiquée du Nouveau Monde. Les Espagnols la ramenèrent en Europe. En France elle fut d’abord connue sous l’appellation de poule des Indes occidentales, puis poule d’Inde, pour finir en dinde. En anglais la dinde a été confondue avec la pintade, Guineafowl, qui avait été importée en Europe centrale par la Turquie. Donc notre chère volaille est devenue Turkeyfowl, puis Turkey. Bien que l’on retrouve dans sa chair du tryptophane, substance induisant la somnolence, manger de la dinde ne fait pas dormir...
